THE SPARKLE CHILDREN'S CHARITY

The Directors of Gamble & Spencer Limited are founding members of The Sparkle Children's Charity (Charity 1076582) which was formed in 1999 by a small group of property and associated professionals. We have been actively involved in the annual Sparkle Charity Ball which has raised close to £1.5 million over the past years in support of a number of projects –

£540,000 donated to The Shooting Star Trust www.shootingstar.org.uk towards the set-up and building of The Shooting Star Hospice for Children in Hampton, Surrey. This Hospice serves West London and provides vitally needed respite and palliative care for children and their families. Thanks to the generosity of many people 2005 saw the realisation of this dream with the official opening of The Shooting Star Hospice.

£460,000 donated to The Rhys Daniels Trust www.rhysdanielstrust.org Home from Home Appeal in association with The Royal Marsden Childrens Hospital in Sutton to purchase two flats. Treatment for severely sick children can often last for months and the hospital has no accommodation suitable for families or for the sick child themselves if they are temporarily allowed to leave the hospital. These flats named Sparkle House & Diamond House were opened in 2006 providing especially adapted home from home accommodation for families when they need to be nearby whilst their child receives treatment at the hospital.

£180,000 donated to The Outward Bound Trust www.outwardbound.org.uk for the redevelopment of “Ty Gwynn” at The Outward Bound Centre in Aberdovey – on completion this building is to be renamed “Sparkle House”. The new specification will enable those young people with special needs such as vision impairment, deafness, autism, aspergers, depression and dyspraxia as well as severe and life threatening illnesses to benefit from an Outward Bound Course at the Aberdovey Centre. The courses provide life changing experiences for young people and have been enormously beneficial in helping them to develop life skills. This development is due to be completed in mid 2008 enabling children with disabilities to have the same opportunity as others without impairment.

£295,000 for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust www.cftrust.org.uk towards their gene therapy research project and also toward the cost of a specialist adult CF unit at The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. The new unit is expected to cost £2.5m-£3m and will accommodate 12 inpatient beds by the end of 2009. If half of the monies required are raised by charitable donations, the hospital and NHS Trust will make up the difference and meet the cost of the on-going support. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited life-threatening disease resulting from a faulty gene, which claims the lives of teenagers and young adults. It affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus which makes it hard to breathe and digest food. The quality and length of life has improved for those born with the disease but the average life expectancy is still only around 31 years.

The date of the next Sparkle Charity Ball will be announced shortly.
